Why Oil-Based Skincare Is the Secret to Truly Nourished Skin
Share
If you have been taught to believe that oil is the enemy of good skin — that it clogs pores, causes breakouts, and should be avoided at all costs — you are not alone. For decades, water-based creams have been marketed as the only way to moisturize, while plant oils were treated with suspicion.
The truth? Oil-based skincare can be wonderful for many skin types. And it is one of the oldest approaches to skin care there is.
At Teatentional, two of the ingredients at the heart of our skincare — black seed and olive oil — are mentioned in authentic hadith of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
Here is why oil-based skincare works, why it might be exactly what your skin has been missing, and how to use it.
Your Skin Already Makes Oil
Your skin produces its own oil, called sebum. This is not a flaw. It is a feature. Sebum helps keep moisture in and forms part of your skin's protective barrier.
Harsh, stripping cleansers and alcohol-heavy toners can wash away too much of this natural oil, leaving skin tight and dry. Many people find their skin feels more balanced once they stop over-stripping it.
Gentle, plant-based oils help replenish what your skin naturally has, so it stays soft and comfortable.
How Oil-Based Skincare Works
Plant oils are rich in fatty acids similar to the lipids in your skin's barrier. They soften the skin and form a light seal that slows moisture loss, which is why oils are so good at keeping skin from drying out.
- For dry skin — Oils are deeply, lastingly nourishing.
- For oily skin — Light oils can moisturize without the heaviness of thick creams.
- For sensitive skin — Simple oil blends with few ingredients can be gentler than long ingredient lists.
- For mature skin — Rich oils help skin look softer and more supple.
Black Seed and Olive Oil
Black Seed
The Prophet ﷺ said: "In this black seed there is healing for every disease except death (as-sām)." (Sahih al-Bukhari 5688, Sahih Muslim 2215)
Black seed (Nigella sativa) oil is rich in fatty acids and a natural compound called thymoquinone, and it has long been used in skin and hair care across the Muslim world.
You will find black seed oil in our Rose Body Oil and our Black Seed Beard and Face Oil.
Olive Oil
Allah mentions the olive tree in the Qur'an, describing a lamp "lit from a blessed tree, an olive" (Sūrat an-Nūr 24:35). And the Prophet ﷺ said: "Eat olive oil and anoint yourselves with it, for it is from a blessed tree." (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 1851, graded sahih by al-Albani)
For skin, olive oil brings:
- Squalene — a natural moisturizing compound also found in our own skin's oils
- Vitamin E — a natural antioxidant
- Oleic acid — a fatty acid that softens and nourishes dry skin
Our Rose Body Oil is infused in olive oil, chosen for both its quality and its barakah.

How to Use Oil-Based Skincare
- On the face: Apply 2–4 drops to clean, slightly damp skin. Press gently into skin rather than rubbing. Use morning and evening.
- On the body: Apply after bathing while skin is still slightly damp. The moisture on your skin helps the oil spread and absorb.
- For hair: Apply to scalp and lengths. Leave for at least 30 minutes or overnight, then wash out.
A Return to What Has Always Worked
