Why Your Skin Deserves Better Than Chemicals: The Case for Natural Skincare

Teatentional
Natural skincare made with plant oils, butters and botanicals

Think about how many products you use before you leave the house. Shampoo, conditioner, body wash, moisturizer, deodorant, makeup — many conventional products contain long lists of synthetic ingredients, preservatives, and added fragrance.

Many people simply want to know what they are putting on their skin, and to keep that list short and recognizable.

This is not to create fear. It is to create awareness. Because once you know what is in your products, you can choose differently.

At Teatentional, we chose simple from day one.

Common Ingredients Some People Prefer to Avoid

Here are some ingredients that show up often in mainstream beauty products, and why some people choose to skip them.

  • Parabens — Preservatives used in moisturizers, shampoos, and makeup. They are approved for use, but because of ongoing questions about how they interact with hormones, many people choose paraben-free products.
  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) — A strong foaming cleanser in many shampoos and body washes. It can leave skin and scalp feeling stripped and is a known irritant for some people, especially those with sensitive skin.
  • Synthetic Fragrance — The word "fragrance" or "parfum" on a label can stand for a blend of many ingredients that do not have to be listed individually. Fragrance is one of the most common causes of skin reactions.
  • Phthalates — Sometimes used in fragrances and plastics. Certain phthalates have been restricted in some countries over health concerns.
  • Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives — Found in some nail polishes, hair-smoothing treatments, and cosmetics. Formaldehyde is classified as a human carcinogen, and these preservatives are common skin allergens.
  • Mineral Oil and Petrolatum — Petroleum-derived and widely used as inexpensive moisture sealants. They do lock in moisture, but they do not bring the fatty acids and plant compounds that botanical oils do.

What Natural Skincare Offers Instead

At Teatentional, our skincare is built on simple ingredients you can recognize:

  • Plant oils — black seed, olive, calendula-infused oils, and more.
  • Botanicals with a long history of use — rose, chamomile, lavender, calendula.
  • Essential oils for scent — fragrance from real plants. (Even natural scents can bother some skin, so we offer unscented options too.)
  • Mineral salts for relaxing bath soaks.
  • Natural exfoliants like raw sugar that polish gently.

Making the Switch

Switching to natural skincare does not have to happen overnight. Here is how to start intentionally:

  1. Start with one product — Replace the one product you use most. Your daily body moisturizer is a great starting point. Swap it for a Whipped Body Butter or Rose Body Oil and feel the difference.
  2. Read your labels — Learn to recognize the ingredients listed above. Once you start reading labels, you will not stop.
  3. Give it a few weeks — Natural products feel different from conventional ones. They do not rely on silicones for an instant smooth feel. Give your skin time to adjust.
  4. Patch test — Natural does not mean no reactions. Try new products on a small area first.
  5. Simplify your routine — You do not need 12 steps. A gentle cleanser, a nourishing oil or butter, and a soothing balm cover most needs. Simplicity is intentional.

Give your skin ingredients you recognize — plants, minerals, and oils — and keep your routine simple.

This is not just skincare. It is a return to simple, intentional care.
