Herbal Tea for Congestion: A Stuffy-Nose Kit for Portland's Wet Season

Herbal tea for congestion - steaming mint and ginger tea for a stuffy nose, Teatentional

Portland's wet season is also its sniffle season. Kids bring colds home from school, coworkers cough through meetings, and the damp chill makes it hard to shake anything once it starts. A stuffy nose is rarely serious, but it makes everything harder: sleeping, working, even tasting your food.

No tea cures a cold. But warm drinks, steam and a few classic herbs are some of the oldest and most comforting ways to feel better while your body does the work.

Why Hot Tea Helps a Stuffy Nose

Hot drinks feel better than cold ones

In one small study, people with colds reported that a hot drink made their nose feel clearer and their symptoms feel lighter, while the same drink at room temperature helped less. Warmth itself seems to be part of the comfort.

Steam

Breathing in steam can loosen thick mucus and soothe dry, irritated nasal passages. Your mug is a tiny steam station.

Fluids

Drinking enough keeps mucus thinner and easier to clear. When you are sick, warm tea is much easier to keep up with than glass after glass of water.

Menthol and warming spices

Peppermint's menthol gives a cool sensation that makes breathing feel easier. Ginger is warming and has long been a cold-weather favorite.

The Best Teatentional Teas for Congestion

1. Moroccan Mint

Peppermint, spearmint and green tea. The most classic stuffy-nose cup there is. Breathe the steam before every sip. It has a little caffeine, so make it a daytime cup.

2. Immunity Support Tea | No. 08

Caffeine-free rooibos with ginger, rosehip, tulsi and citrus. Warming, tangy and gentle enough to drink all day, including at night when congestion makes it hard to sleep.

3. Citrus Blend Tea | No. 13

Black tea with orange, tangerine, ginger, lemongrass and a hint of eucalyptus. Bright and wake-you-up citrusy for sick-day mornings.

4. Forest Walk

Greek mountain tea with Manuka honey powder, linden and applemint. Soft, sweet and caffeine-free, a cozy pick for the couch and for the last cup before bed.

How to Do a Tea Steam

  1. Brew a strong cup of Moroccan Mint or Citrus Blend.
  2. Let it cool for a minute so the steam is warm, not scalding.
  3. Hold the mug just under your nose and breathe in slowly through your nose for 1 to 2 minutes.
  4. Then sip it while it is still hot.

Skip steam tents over boiling pots, especially around kids. Burns from spilled hot water are a real risk.

A Eucalyptus Routine for Wet-Season Colds

A steamy eucalyptus bath

Our Eucalyptus Bath Soak combines Epsom salt, sea salt and eucalyptus essential oil. Close the bathroom door, run the water warm, and let the room fill with steam. Soak 20 minutes with a mug of tea on the edge of the tub.

A chest rub before bed

Afterward, smooth a little Eucalyptus Whipped Body Butter onto your chest and neck. The fresh scent is comforting as you fall asleep, and the shea butter helps with the dry skin that comes with blowing your nose a hundred times.

Want everything in one box?

The Breathe Easy Box Set brings together a bath soak, whipped body butter, body scrub and essential oil for diffusing. It is a thoughtful care package to drop on a sick friend's porch.

Safety Notes

  • Eucalyptus and young children: do not apply eucalyptus products to the face or chest of babies and young children, and never swallow eucalyptus essential oil. Ask your pediatrician before using eucalyptus products with kids.
  • Peppermint is not recommended near the face of infants.
  • Liquorice (in Citrus Blend No. 13) can raise blood pressure in some people.
  • If you are pregnant, nursing or take medication, check with your doctor about herbal ingredients.
  • See a doctor if you have trouble breathing, a high fever, symptoms that last more than 10 days, or symptoms that get better and then suddenly worse.
