The Sunnah of Self-Care: How the Prophet Modeled Hygiene and Beauty
Teatentional
Long before skincare routines went viral, before ten-step beauty methods, before wellness became a trillion-dollar industry — the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) taught his Companions that cleanliness and good grooming are part of a believer's life.
The authentic hadith show him using the siwak, caring for his hair, loving good scent, and teaching purification before prayer.
This is part of the inspiration behind Teatentional.
The Siwak
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Were it not that it would be difficult for my nation, I would have commanded them to use the siwak before every prayer." (Sahih al-Bukhari 887, Sahih Muslim 252)
Caring for the Hair
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever has hair, let him honor it." (Sunan Abi Dawud 4163, graded hasan sahih by al-Albani)
Ibn 'Abbās reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out from Madinah after combing his hair and applying oil. (Sahih al-Bukhari 1545)
Honoring your hair means keeping it clean and cared for. Our Rosemary Hair and Scalp Treatment is a simple oil for a weekly scalp and hair routine.
Olive Oil and Black Seed
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Eat olive oil and anoint yourselves with it, for it is from a blessed tree." (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 1851, graded sahih by al-Albani)
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In this black seed there is healing for every disease except death." (Sahih al-Bukhari 5688, Sahih Muslim 2215)
These two ingredients sit at the heart of our Rose Body Oil (rose, calendula and black seed infused in olive oil) and our Black Seed Beard and Face Oil.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and Good Scent
Anas ibn Mālik reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) never refused a gift of perfume. (Sahih al-Bukhari 2582)
Anas also said: "I never smelled musk or ambergris more fragrant than the scent of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." (Sahih al-Bukhari 3561, Sahih Muslim 2330)
Good scent and good grooming are not at odds with modesty. They are part of presenting yourself with dignity — to yourself and to your family. Our products are scented with plant essential oils like lavender, rose and eucalyptus, and we also make unscented options.
Purification
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Purification is half of faith." (Sahih Muslim 223)
The wudu performed before every prayer is a built-in rhythm of cleansing — water on the face, arms, head and feet, five times a day, in preparation to stand before Allah.
Outside of wudu, a warm bath with one of our mineral bath soaks and a few minutes of skincare afterward is a simple way to rest and take care of the body Allah has given you.
The Beard
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded the men to let the beard grow and trim the moustache. (Sahih al-Bukhari 5892, Sahih Muslim 259)
Keeping the beard clean and well-kept is part of good grooming. Our Black Seed Beard and Face Oil softens beard hair and conditions the skin beneath.
Self-Care With the Right Intention
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Actions are only by intentions." (Sahih al-Bukhari 1, Sahih Muslim 1907) Every drop of oil, every warm bath, every moment of care can be done with the intention of gratitude to Allah for the body you have been given.
Building Your Routine
- Morning: Use the siwak. Wash your face. Apply Black Seed Beard and Face Oil or Calendula and Rose Face Oil. Say bismillah.
- Throughout the day: Keep yourself clean and fresh through wudu.
- Evening: Take a warm bath with a mineral soak. Care for your hair with Rosemary Hair and Scalp Treatment. Apply Rose Body Oil before sleep.
- Weekly: A longer routine — exfoliation with a sugar scrub and Calendula Salve for any dry spots.
This is not about perfection. It is about intention. Small, consistent acts of care, done with gratitude.
