The Power of Niyyah: How Setting Intention Transforms Your Tea Ritual
Teatentional
There is a profound concept in Islam called niyyah — intention. It is the purpose in the heart behind an action: why you are doing what you are doing.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Actions are only by intentions, and every person will have only what he intended." (Sahih al-Bukhari 1, Sahih Muslim 1907)
The scholars explain that everyday permissible acts — eating, drinking, resting — done with a good intention, such as gaining strength to obey Allah, can be rewarded. A cup of tea taken with gratitude and presence is no longer just a drink.
This is the philosophy at the heart of Teatentional.
What Happens When You Slow Down
When you rush — eating at your desk, drinking tea while scrolling, going through the motions without being present — you barely notice what you are doing.
When you slow down — when you sit, breathe, hold a warm cup, and drink with awareness — you feel calmer and more present, and you actually taste what is in your cup.
How to Set an Intention Before Your Tea
You do not need a ceremony. You need thirty seconds and a willing heart.
Before you steep, pause. Ask yourself: what do I need right now? What is my intention for this cup?
Then choose your tea accordingly:
- For focus and energy — Vitality Energy Tea No. 04, with an intention of focus and presence.
- For calm at the end of the day — Sleepy Night No. 09 or Sleep Support, with an intention of rest.
- For cold, run-down days — Immunity Support No. 08, with gratitude for your health.
- For a moment of self-care — Woman Support Ummi No. 06, with an intention of caring for yourself.
- For grounding — Forest Walk or Herbal Wellness No. 07.
- For joy — Tropical Harvest No. 03 or Romance in a Cup, with an intention of gratitude.
Say Bismillah
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught a young boy at his table: "Mention the name of Allah, eat with your right hand, and eat from what is in front of you." (Sahih al-Bukhari 5376, Sahih Muslim 2022)
Saying bismillah before eating and drinking is a Sunnah. It is a moment of remembering that this cup, and everything else, is a blessing from Allah. And when you finish, say alhamdulillah.
Your Tea, With Gratitude
Caring for your body — nourishing it, hydrating it, resting it — done with the right intention, is a way of showing gratitude to the One who gave it to you.
You are not just drinking tea. You are practicing intentional living.
A Simple Intention Practice
Try this for one week. Every morning, before your first cup of tea:
- Put your phone down. Just for this moment.
- Place both hands around your warm cup.
- Take one slow breath.
- Say bismillah.
- Set one intention for how you want to show up today. Present. Grateful. Focused. Patient. Strong.
- Sip slowly, sitting down.
- When you finish, say alhamdulillah.
Notice what changes.
This is the Teatentional way. Not just tea. Intentional living in every sip. See also our morning teas.
Steep intentionally. Sip with intention.
